The Unexpected MVP: Wines to Pair with Your Super Bowl Spread

Forget the beer and the margaritas. This year, the Most Valuable Player at your Super Bowl party is WINE! Yes! Why not elevate this celerated event with wines paired with classic football fare? It’s easy and I’ll show you how right here.

Clean Slate Riesling

This affordalicious Riesling is exactly what you want with savory, spicy Asian fare. Think sushi platters, poke bowls, Thai spring rolls. It also pairs beautifully to fried chicken .

It’s just a tiny bit sweet, so it stands up nicely to spice and salt, and all that luscious crisp green-apple fruit stands up to some heat, too. Find this for about $13 at Specs in Houston and on wine.com. For more info, click here.

Root: 1 Cabernet Sauvignon

Everybody loves Cabernet! It’s the best-selling red wine in America. From Root 1, comes from sun-drenched Maipo Valley on the west side of Chile. It’s got a rich, red color and full body, with juicy flavors of red and black fruit and a little dried herbs.

This is the wine you want with sliders and chili. Bonus: Root 1 is the first sustainably certified winery in Chile (I love any wine that minimizes its impact on the planet.) Find it for about $14 at Specs in Houston or on wine.com

Tilia Malbec

Malbec is Argentina’s calling card and this is one of the best. It shows off signature black cherries, backed up with some fun dried violet notes and round, silky tannins. It’s made from 100% certified organic grapes. In fact, Tilia Wines put sustainability at the center of everything.

Pair this wine with sausage or pepperoni pizza, grilled sausages, a charcuterie platter, even mac ‘n cheese. And you know what else is great with Malbec? Pigs in blankets (just roll mini-hotdogs in refrigerated croissant dough and bake). Its versatility makes it an easy pairing.

Find it for about $12 at Specs in Houston and on wine.com.

Domaine E de M N.O. Rosé Non-alcoholic Sparkling Wine

This is a very interesting new wine created by Laura Catena, of Argentina’s famous Catena family of wine makers. It is made from the Airén grape in Spain, and gently de-alcoholized using vacuum distillation. Then it is force-carbonated and bottled. But there’s an important step in there that sets this apart. The wine is infused with rose petals! So, it has a distinct floral note that wafts out of the glass.

Laura Catena made it for her mom, hence the name. E de M stands for Elena de Mendoza, and she asked her daughter to make an NA wine that she could enjoy.

Pair this with Middle Eastern fare like falafel and hummus and pita chips. It also works with potato chips and onion dip, or guacamole and tortilla chips.

Find it for about $25 on wine.com.

This Super Bowl, choose wine as a strategic player in your culinary lineup. It’s the MVP that everyone will remember.
