Red-Carpet Ready Wine Pairings

January is TV season! First – I’m on WGN’s “Daytime Chicago” this morning talking about … wines to pair with your Hollywood award shows!  The Golden Globes kick off award season on January 7.  Then we’ve got Emmy Awards on January 15, Oscar nominations are announced on January 23 and the Grammy Awards are on February 4. Wine and potato chips are the new Hollywood “it” couple, each making the other better!

You can see all the TV fun unfold on the wine red carpet here.

Golden Globes on January 7 — Zardetto Prosecco Brut A glass of bubbly is the perfect way to toast the Hollywood Awards season. This refined and refreshing Prosecco from Zardetto is a dynamite pairing with classic potato chips. The fresh, citrusy notes and zingy acidity of the wine are balanced out by salty potato chips. Glera is the grape in all Prosecco and Zardetto’s grapes are harvested from hillside vineyards. $17

Emmy Awards on January 15 — Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc Villa Maria has been making wines in New Zealand for more than 60 years. They are known for making bold, expressive wines and this wine is a perfect example. It’s crisp, dry and fruit-forward. You’re gonna get some gooseberry, passionfruit, fresh citrus and just a hint of green herbaceous notes. The acidity in this wine screams for salt-and-vinegar potato chips. Take a sip of the wine, and chase it with a chip – then take another sip. As my friend Greta likes to say, “it’s a taste explosion!” $17

Grammy Awards on February 4 — Tres Picos Borsao Garnacha — Back in 2000, this was the first wine to be labeled 100% Garnacha and it quickly became the benchmark for quality Garnacha wines. This wine offers up generous blackberry and plum flavors, some fine old leather and a bit of vanilla from oak aging. It’s a bold wine and it needs a bold snack like barbecue potato chips. The intense fruit notes of the wine will stand up perfectly to the zesty tomato-y flavor of the chips. $18

I’d like to thank the academy for reading this article! Cheers, friends.
